Devil's Tower

Devil's Tower

Devil's Tower is an unusual geological feature that extends from the ground in the middle of a prairie. It is an impressive sight that pictures don't do justice. There is really nothing around Devil's Tower, so it is a bit out of the way. But we were glad we decided to make the stop as it really does leave you in awe of nature. You don't need more than 2 hours unless you are someone who is going to actually rock climb to the top of the tower. In that case, you will need a few days!

There is a short trail that goes about half way around the tower and is an easy hike that gives you different views of the tower. On one side of the tower there's a huge pile of rocks you will see people climbing on to get closer to the tower. This is a fun thing to do, but I suggest hiking the trail to the opposite side of the giant rock pile. Eventually you will come to a sign that tells you in order to hike closer to the tower, you will need a permit. The owner of Devil's Tower Lodge (where we stayed) told us to ignore this sign and hike right past it! He claimed no one ever checks for permits unless you are actually rock climbing! We figured we'd claim ignorance if anyone questioned us and we ignored the sign! Fortunately we didn't run into any issues! I would highly suggest doing as we did and ignoring the sign. Hiking past the sign gets you as close to the tower as you can without actually climbing it. It is one thing to see Devil's Tower, but it is even better to actually get to touch the base of it! It gets you right up to the part of the tower that is straight up, which gets you a lot closer than those who climb over the giant rock pile. It also provides you with a totally new perspective of the tower. You will notice that the tower is indeed at a slant and that is how animals get to the top and how rock climbers are able to climb it!

Giant Rock Pile

Going past the sign!

As far as we can go without rock climbing!

What a sight!

Pretty view from the base of the tower!

If you do not stay at Devil's Tower Lodge, be sure to read up on some of the legends surrounding how the tower came into existence. Or explore the National Park Service website that will give you the history and legends of Devil's Tower. This makes exploring it a little more interesting!

Overall, we would give Devil's Tower 3 stars out of 5. It is a remarkable monument we suggest visiting, but note that it is a quick visit and not something you need to spend more than a few hours at!
